Located right next to Illinois Route 38, the Geneva Motel is seen by thousands of people every day. Normally a business would be thrilled with this type of location, but in this case being in the immediate eyesight of thousands of people was a serious problem. Residing adjacent to the Geneva Motel is a small pond. Prior to August of 2003, this pond was covered in a thick coating of duckweed that stretched across the surface entirely. The pond had become eutrophic (full of nutrients and void of oxygen), and the result was a green, soupy pond that bubbled black sediment and emitted an unpleasant sulfuric odor. Tests indicated that the dissolved oxygen level was as low as 0.2%. In August of 2003, MARS Aeration was installed into the Geneva Motel pond in an effort to restore it to a healthful state. Almost immediately, with the simultaneous oxygenation and circulation that the MARS instilled into the Geneva Motel pond, an improvement was evident. Initially there was a clearing in the algae above where the aerator was installed, but over the next couple of weeks the clearing spread all across the pond. After just one month of MARS Aeration, the Geneva Motel pond had a dissolved oxygen reading close to 4%, and the water surface had made itself apparent once again. The sulfuric smell had dissipated and the liquefied black sediment no longer bubbled to the surface. The restoration of a sustainable pond ecosystem had been established almost instantly. Seven years after the MARS Aerator was installed into the Geneva Motel pond, the dissolved oxygen level is still steady around 8%. Algae growth has been almost entirely abated and the pond is now able to sustain a healthy ecosystem. The pond has been transformed from a dangerous, odorous eyesore into an amenity that is now an asset to the Geneva Motel instead of a hindrance.
